Skipper and Crew: Who Is Responsible for What

The sea does not tolerate randomness.
On a yacht, like in a small universe, everything is built on trust and mutual understanding. Every person on board is an important part of the crew. There are no passengers here — only participants in a shared journey, where every role truly matters.

The Skipper – Captain, Leader and the Soul of the Crew

On a yacht, as in any journey, someone must take responsibility for safety, direction and the overall atmosphere on board.
That person is the Skipper.

The skipper is not just the helmsman or “the person at the wheel”. He or she is the link between the sea, the crew and the yacht itself.

A skipper knows not only where to go, but how to get there – safely, confidently and with a feeling for the sea. On board, the skipper’s word is law. His or her decisions are not debated (as long as they comply with regulations).
The skipper is responsible for the life and safety of everyone on board – not through authority, but through calmness, experience and respect.

What is important to remember:

  • Respect the skipper’s decisions, especially in uncertain situations or changing weather. The skipper carries both legal and real responsibility for everyone on board.
    • If you disagree with something, discuss it calmly on shore, after the voyage – not in the heat of action.
    • Offer help. The skipper is not service staff, but a leader. The more united the crew, the easier it is to manage the voyage.
    • If the skipper delegates roles – such as galley duty, sail handling, navigation or watchkeeping – accept this willingly. It is part of maritime culture.

In our crews, the skipper does not contribute to the common onboard budget.
The crew takes care of the captain – providing meals and gladly inviting them to walks, excursions and dinners ashore.
This follows an old maritime tradition: the captain is cared for, so they can care for everyone else.

The Crew – The Heart of the Voyage

Even the most experienced skipper cannot manage without a crew.
The crew is not just people who help with sails or anchoring – it is the energy, rhythm and mood of the yacht.

Roles on board form naturally:
• Bowman – handles the anchor, assists with sails and keeps watch at the bow.
• Stern crew member – manages lines, assists during manoeuvres and docking.
• Cook – responsible for meals, cleanliness and comfort in the saloon.
• Hostess – takes care of guests’ comfort and supports both skipper and crew.
• Crew – everyone on board. Each person helps where they can, creating a smooth and harmonious journey.

On a yacht, there are no small things.
Someone hands a mooring line at the right moment, someone smiles when it’s needed – and suddenly the day feels brighter and the sea calmer.

Principles of a Good Crew

  • Listen to the skipper – decisions are made with safety in mind.
  • Do not interfere with others – space and respect matter on board.
  • Help without being asked – the sea values attentiveness.
  • Keep things tidy – a clean deck and cabin create inner comfort.
  • Share good energy – a smile on board is as valuable as a precise course.

When everyone acts as one, the voyage becomes a smooth flow – where each day is filled with meaning and freedom.

The Sailing To Go Atmosphere

We believe that the sea brings out the best in people – calmness, kindness and mutual respect.
A true journey begins where “I” and “they” end – and “we” begins.

The skipper leads not only the yacht, but also the spirit of the crew.
The crew, in turn, fills the voyage with warmth, care and living energy.

On board Sailing To Go, everything is simple:
smile, respect, help and enjoy the moment.
The sea will take care of the rest.

With care and love for the sea — your Sailing To Go.
May every wind be favourable, and every day on board filled with trust and lightness.
